Frequently asked questions
Short answers to the essential questions about TWB's history and how it worked.
What was Teleradiology Without Borders (TWB)?
Teleradiology Without Borders (TWB) was a Luxembourg-based nonprofit association (a.s.b.l.) active from 2007 to 2014. It provided remote second-opinion radiology through a secure teleradiology platform.
Who founded TWB?
TWB was founded in 2007 by Dr. Jean-Baptiste Niedercorn, MD and Dr. Gérald Wajnapel, MD, both radiologists.
When was TWB active?
TWB was active from 2007 to 2014. Its last documented project, in 2014, concerned a miniaturized system for encryption and secure exchange of radiological images deployed in Benin.
How did the network work?
The network was based on pairs combining an experienced radiologist (reader) with a physician practising in a resource-limited medical setting (emitter). Anonymized cases were transmitted through a secure DICOM platform for interpretation.
Which countries were served?
Documented projects notably involved Cameroon, Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Benin and Rwanda. Readers were based notably in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Venezuela, Portugal and the United States.
Why is this website maintained?
TWB ceased operations in 2014. This website is maintained as the official historical archive, to preserve and document its contribution to humanitarian teleradiology.
Where can I find historical references?
The Publications page gathers the main academic and documentary references related to TWB, notably the Journal de Radiologie (2008) and Pediatric Radiology (2011).
